2023 Shooting Australia National Squad

Applications to be part of the 2023 Shooting Australia National Squad are now closed.

The structure and application process will be replicated to that used to select the 2022 squad, and again recognises that different athletes require different levels of support and services to aid their development towards winning medals at benchmark events.

Key Dates

Applications Open: Thursday 6 October, 2022

Applications Close: 5:00pm AEDT Thursday 20th October, 2022 (without exception)

Squad Announced: Week commencing Monday 31st October, 2022

How do I apply?

To be considered for selection to Shooting Australia’s National Squads in 2023, you are required to complete the National Squad Application Form online. Further detailed information is also available within the application.

Is there an alternative way to apply if I am having trouble with the online application?

No. All applications must be submitted online. If you are having difficulties accessing the online application or working through the detail, please reach out to Shae Berry in advance of the closing date.

If I was a 2022 Squad Member, do I need to reapply if I would like to be considered as part of the 2023 Squad?

Yes. There is no automatic re-selection from year to year. But you do not need to provide the same level of detail as new applicants because we already have this information.

Am I eligible to apply if I have never been part of a Shooting Australia National Squad?

If you feel you might fit into one of the three National Squad categories identified below, then yes you should! Further information regarding eligibility can be found in the application.

What are the three National Squad Categories?

High Performance Squad – Current world-class athletes who have demonstrated their ability to regularly make finals and win medals in International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) or World Para Shooting Sport (WSPS) competitions in recent years. These athletes continue to demonstrate their commitment to high performance training/preparation both on and off the range.

Performance Squad – Athletes who are regularly achieving selection to National Teams and whose international performances indicate that they are ‘on track’ to making finals and winning medals in ISSF/WSPS competitions. These athletes are also demonstrating a commitment to high performance training/preparation on and off the range.

Pathways Squad – Athletes who are considered capable of achieving National Team selection based largely on their performances in domestic competition (i.e., junior or senior) and demonstrate a commitment to becoming a high-performance athlete.

How is a successful application determined?

A selection panel comprising Shooting Australia’s National Coaches/Leads and High Performance staff will make 2023 National Squad selection decisions based on a combination of:

  • Each athlete’s current level of performance (i.e. domestic and international);

  • Each athlete’s potential to progress towards world-class performance standards in the future.

If my application is successful, which National Squad will I be allocated to?

Successful athletes will be allocated to one of the three squads (High Performance, Performance or Pathways) that best suits their age and stage of development.

How will I benefit by becoming a National Squad Member?

Shooting Australia’s National Squad Members will be exposed to varying levels of:

  • Planning support
  • Technical support
  • National camps
  • Competition support
  • Athlete Wellbeing support

Do I need to be part of a National Squad to be selected to National Teams to represent Australia in international competitions?

No. Any individual can be eligible for National Team Selection if they have met the Selection Criteria requirements.

Where do I find further information?
