ISSF Confirms Shooting Sport Program for LA Olympic Games

The International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) has announced that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed the shooting sport program for the Los Angeles (LA) 2028 Olympic Games.

The program will be comprised of 15 events including:

  • 10m air rifle for men and women;
  • 50m rifle 3 position for men and women;
  • 10m air pistol for men and women;
  • Trap for men and women;
  • Skeet for men and women;
  • 25m rapid fire pistol for men;
  • 25m pistol for women;
  • 10m air rifle mixed team;
  • 10m air pistol mixed team; and
  • Trap mixed team.

The ISSF has confirmed that whilst the qualification formats for each of the 15 events will remain unchanged from the Paris 2024 cycle, the finals formats for some events will change. These changes include:

  • An increase in the number of finalists in shotgun (trap and skeet) and 25m rapid fire from six to eight;
  • The final for 50m rifle 3 position will feature the standing position only; and
  • The omission of gold and bronze medal matches in mixed team events. In LA 2028, all four teams who progress from qualification to the finals will compete together in an elimination format.

The ISSF also confirmed that shooting will retain the same number of quota places (i.e. 340) at the LA 2028 Olympics as there were in the Paris 2024 Games. The process of allocating these quotas is currently being developed by the ISSF for endorsement by the IOC in the coming months.

In response to the ISSF’s announcement, Shooting Australia Chief Executive Officer, Adam Sachs, said, “Confirmation of Shooting’s LA Olympic Program is welcomed and is very timely as we start to progress work on our campaign planning for the 2028 Games. It is great to see that the number of shooting events and quotas has been maintained from Paris 2024.”

Of the proposed finals format changes, Sachs said, “The ISSF is looking to trial its new finals formats during 2025 and will formalise their implementation at all international competitions from 1 January 2026. We will be staying abreast of the changes and once they have been finalised, we will work closely with our domestic event hosts on the implementation of the new finals here in Australia. Shooting Australia’s support will extend to training or updating event Officials and Volunteers, and educating our athletes about the finals format changes they will experience in competitions here and abroad.”

With the Paralympic Shooting program yet to be confirmed, Sachs said, “We are looking forward to receiving confirmation from World Shooting Para Sports and the International Paralympic Committee about the shooting sports program for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games. We are expecting to receive this information in the coming weeks.”

The complete event programme for the LA Olympic games will include a total of 351 medal events (22 more than at Paris 2024) and a core athlete quota of 10,500.
