Locked on Target: Shooting Australia’s Board Poised for Success

Shooting Australia’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Thursday, 27 November 2025, with the Board, Senior Management, and Members in attendance.

The AGM marked the conclusion of an important year of Board and governance evolution for Shooting Australia that captured:

  • The alignment of the constitution with the Sport Governance Standards as required by the Australian Sports Commission;
  • Appointment of three directors that align with the Board skills matrix and diversity requirements; and
  • Formally recognising the Finance and Audit Committee and Nominations Committee, appointing independent Chairs and ensuring strong succession planning

Early in 2025, two Elected Directors resigned from the Board for personal reasons, and Shooting Australia extends its appreciation for their service. Mrs Lorraine Hughes is thanked for her contribution to the Board and her valued service as a member of the Finance and Audit Committee. Mr Andrew Sims, who stepped down from the President role in February, is acknowledged for his instrumental leadership and support of Shooting Australia throughout the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic cycle.

During the AGM, Members voted on and elected a Board Member from three nominated candidates. Shooting Australia extends its congratulations to Mr Robert (Bob) Maddocks on his re-election to a second three-year term as an Elected Director. His ongoing commitment, contribution and stability are deeply appreciated.

Following the AGM, the Board convened to elect its new leadership team; President Mrs Deserie Baynes and Deputy President Mr James Kitching. Together, Deserie and James form a balanced leadership team guiding a skilled, diverse and forward-looking Board.

Deserie, an Olympic Bronze Medalist in Double Trap Shooting (Atlanta 1996), brings extensive experience as an athlete, coach, official, high-performance mentor, and Board Director. Reflecting on her service on the Board since joining in 2019 and her recent appointment as President, Deserie shared, ‘My time on the Board so far has reinforced just how committed our target shooting community is. I am honoured to step into the role of President as we look toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, and then further ahead to Brisbane. I am excited to champion excellence and leverage the opportunity presented by a home Games in 2032.

On behalf of the Board, we thank all members, staff volunteers, officials, partners and stakeholders for their ongoing support as we continue strengthening the foundation for Shooting Australia’s success.”

James, who brings significant governance expertise from his experience in the global sports industry, took the opportunity to reflect on Shooting Australia’s trajectory and position heading towards the next two Games cycles. “The Board is in a strong place, diverse in skills, aligned in purpose, and supported by an excellent management team. We have the right governance structures now firmly in place, giving Shooting Australia the platform it needs to thrive on the road to Los Angeles 2028 and to set ourselves up for an exceptional home Games in Brisbane. Our focus is long-term sustainability, integrity, and positioning our athletes and community to succeed.”

The 2024/2025 Annual Report was also accepted during the AGM and is now available on Shooting Australia’s website.
