Zappelli narrowly misses another final

Anton Zappelli was left to lament his second near finals berth when placed 11th in the R6 Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1 Para Shooting qualifying event on the final day of the Tokyo Paralympic Games today.

Zappelli finished with a strong overall total of 616.0 points in the 48 person qualifying round, but missed a place in the top eight final by just 1.4 points.

Zappelli performed steadily in the opening three 10-shot series rounds recording scores of 102.2, 102.5 and 103.9 to be in contention for a place in the final at the halfway mark.

But he slipped down the rankings during the fourth and fifth series with tallies of 101.0 and 101.6 which included a wayward score of 8.8 points with his 49th shot.

The Perth athlete then rallied strongly in the sixth and final series to register an impressive score of 104.8 – the sixth highest individual series score from any athlete during the qualification round. But it wasn’t enough to claim a place in the eight person final.

Earlier in the Games, Zappelli narrowly missed a place in the R3 Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone final when just 1.1 points off qualifying for the final.
